NL boys teams unbeaten in Atlantic age-group soccer


Newfoundland and Labrador’s boys’ entries in Atlantic age-group soccer championships take undefeated records into today, the final day of preliminary-round play at the events.

In Moncton, N.B., Newfoundland’s under-15 boys are 2-0 and the under-16 boys have a win and a tie heading into their games against Prince Edward Island today

Both teams recorded 1-0 wins over New Brunswick Sunday, with Owen Sheppard scoring for the U15s and Cameron Lundrigan getting the winner for the U16s on a penalty kick with four minutes remaining.

The U15s had blanked Nova Scotia 5-0 Saturday, while the U16s had opened with a scoreless tie against the Nova Scotians.

In Halifax, Newfoundland’s under-15 girls got goals from Abbie Betts and Melessa Bazan in a 2-1 win over P.E.I. on Sunday to bounce back after a 4-0 loss to Nova Scotia Saturday.

The province’s under-girls lost 3-1 to P.E.I. Sunday — Alex Murphy had Newfoundland’s lone goal — after battling Nova Scotia to a 2-2 tie Saturday.

Both teams take on New Brunswick today.

Medal games are set for Tuesday, with the first-and second-place finishers after the preliminary round squaring off for gold.
