Obituary: Charlie Snook helped GeeBees, Guards to provincial soccer titles


Funeral services will be held in St. John’s today for Charles (Charlie) Snook, a provincial soccer Hall of Famer who died Monday. Snook was 83.

A native of Grand Bank, Snook played senior soccer with his hometown GeeBees while still in school and led themto an All-Newfoundland title in 1954, when he was named most valuable player of the provincial finals played against St. John’s in Corner Brook.
That same year, he moved St. John’s, where he played for Guards, helping that team to provincial crowns in 1957, 1958 and 1959. In 1957, Snook was the scoring champion of the St. John’s league. He was also a four-time all-star.
Funeral service will be held from the Carnell Memorial Chapel at 2 p.m. today, with interment to follow in the Salvation Army Cemetery, Blackmarsh Road. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre.
