A Newfoundland Soccer Hall of Famer, in addition to Burin Peninsula and St. Lawrence soccer Hall of Fame member, Kelly won four provincial soccer championships with the Laurentians, and a pair of Atlantic titles.
Known for his big shot, Kelly was a two-time provincial soccer MVP, and four times was named the Laurentians’ most outstanding player after beginning his career in 1956 at the age of 17.
Kelly was on the first provincial soccer team to travel outside the province when it took on Toronto Ballymena in a night game in 1967 — the first time St. Lawrence played under the lights.
He was one of the Laurentians’ goalscorers in a 3-2 loss.
Following his playing days, Kelly served on the St. Lawrence Soccer Association executive.
Resting at St. Thomas Aquinas Roman Catholic Church in St. Lawrence, a funeral mass will take place 11 a.m. Saturday.
