Provincial soccer celebrating the past season, past greats


The Newfoundland Labrador Soccer Association will honor its best for the 2016 season, and greats from years gone during the organization’s annual awards and Hall of Fame ceremony tonight in St. John’s.

It’s all part of soccer’s annual general meeting today and Saturday at the Comfort Inn in St. John’s.

Scheduled to receive awards are Brent Hennebury (George Innes Youth Male Player of the Year), Alexandra Murphy (Judi Kelloway Youth Female Player of the Year), John Douglas (Brian Murphy Senior Male Player of the Year), Hannah Rivkin (Laura Breen Senior Female Player of the Year), Mike Power (Doug Sweetapple Coach of the Year), St. John’s Under-14 Girls (Angus Barrett Team of the Year), Ian Chaytor (Ben Lake Executive of the Year), Shane Dunphy (Doug Redmond Volunteer of the Year) and Shannon Tobin (Ross Arlett Memorial Award.

Hall of Fame inductees tonight are Bob Spearns, Harry Kelly, Mike Howlett, Dr. Paul Slaney, Malcolm Osmond and Bill “Doc” Slaney.

Elections will also take place for vice-president senior men’s, vice-president of senior women and treasurer. Incumbents Jeff Tiller and Doug Kirby are seeking re-election of their respective posts, while Gord Dunphy, who was the VP of senior and Challenge Cup commissioner, will not be seeking re-election.

President Doug Redmond, vice-president of youth (Judi Kelloway) and secretary (Dave LeGrow) are entering the second year of their two-year terms and do not require re-election.

The NLSA represents over 11,000 registered players in 30 associations around the province.
