Girls U12 side captures title at Laval International Cup

They stood up to the heat… and not just from the opposition.

The St. John’s Soccer Association’s under-12 girls team won the 2018 Laval International Cup, going undefeated in the tournament held in sweltering suburban Montreal.
The St. John’s team was 3-0 in the event, played in temperatures that registered from 32 to 36 Celsius each day, much higher when the Humidex was factored,.
But despite conditions much, much hotter than what they had been experienced during an exceptionally cool June in eastern Newfoundland, the St. John’s youngsters prevailed. In fact, the team from Blainville, Que., that they were supposed to have faced in Sunday’s final defaulted because of roster problems caused by a combination of heat exhaustion and injuries.
The St. John’s team, which didn’t allow a goal in the tourney. had actually defeated Blainville 2-0 in one of their lead-up matches against Quebec opponents. In the others, they downed SC Chomedy 4-0 and blanked the Delta Tornades 5-0.
Members of the team include Taylor Squires, Maria Antle, Alyssa Davis-Tucker, Lacey Murphy, Ellery Clouston, Luci Thoms, Ellie Power, Megan King, Olivia Carew, Jorja Ryan, Chloe Lee, Bethany Lee, Sitaye Penney, Sydney Moyles, coaches Wayne Antle and Stefan Thoms and manager Heidi Ryan.
St. John’s was also represented in the boys’ U12 division in Laval. That team went 1-2, getting knocked out by a 2-1 loss to Phenix SC on Sunday.
