As was first reported in The Telegram April 27, the new ECHL pro hockey franchise for St. John’s will be known as the Newfoundland Growlers.
The name, team colours and logo were officially unveiled Tuesday morning during a news conference at The Rooms.
The Growlers play their first game in franchised history Oct. 12 against the Florida Everblades at Mile One Centre.
The ECHL – dubbed the premiere AA pro hockey league – has become the league of choice for many cities which had once been part of the American Hockey League. St. John’s, after 20 years in the AHL, becomes the ninth former city from that league to join the ECHL.
