Gushue, and his world champion teammates Mark Nichols, Brett Gallant and Geoff Walker lost 4-3 in an extra end to Scotland’s Greg Drummond Saturday to finish out the round robin, a result that knocked the team out of contention for a quarter-final playoff berth.
Still, the failure to advance can’t take away from the big start Gushue has enjoyed this season. Prior to the Shorty Jenkins, the curlers won the Grand Slam of Curling Tour Challenge in Regina, Sask. Gushue opened the year winning all three games in the $200,000 Everest Challenge in Fredericton, N.B. His specially-drafted team in that event included Cathy Overton, E.J. Harnden and Lisa Weagle.
He also competed with Val Sweeting in a speciality event in Winnipeg, the Canad Inns Mixed Doubles.
The Shorty Jenkins closes out a busy string of four straight weekends curling. The team gets a small break before heading overseas and the Swiss Cup Basel in Basel, Switzerland Sept. 28-Oct. 1.
Gushue has won that event four times.
