In celebration of National Popcorn Day this Saturday, Cineplex will be doling out free popcorn to movie-goers who hold a valid SCENE membership.

Members can can visit the Scotiabank Theatre at the Avalon Mall or the Cineplex Cinemas Mount Pearl, scene their card or barcode from the SCENE app and receive one small bag of popcorn for free.

“Indulging in a bag of Cineplex popcorn is an essential part of the movie-going experience and what better way to recognize this fun day than with a free serving of our time-honoured treat,” Sarah Van Lange, Executive Director of Communications stated in a release.

After serving more than 200 million kernels of popcorn on National Popcorn Day in 2018, Cineplex expects to eclipse 300 million kernels this year.

Cineplex popcorn facts:

• Popcorn comes in two shapes: ‘snowflake’ and ‘mushroom.’ ‘Snowflake’ popcorn is light and fluffy and served hot and fresh in Cineplex theatres. ‘Mushroom’ popcorn is round and compact to hold specialty toppings and is used in Cineplex’s Poptopia brand.

• Cineplex pops roughly 29 billion popcorn kernels over the course of a year. If laid end-to-end, that’s enough popcorn to: climb the CN Tower nearly one million times; climb the Calgary Tower nearly three million times, climb the Peace Tower in Ottawa  nearly six million times; climb the Notre-Dame Basilica in Montreal over nine million times; and pass Confederation Bridge in Prince Edward Island over 42,000 times.

• If you laid popcorn kernels end-to-end from coast-to-coast beginning at Cineplex’s Scotiabank Theatre in St. John’s and ending at its theatre in Victoria, B.C., it would take more than 373 million popped kernels to span the distance
