ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – Sparkes Trucking Ltd. has registered an extension of its existing sand quarry near Piper’s Hole River and estuary with the provincial government for an environmental assessment.

According to a bulletin from the Department of Municipal Affairs and Environment released on Wednesday, June 20, the company is proposing to add an additional three hectares to the quarry, located roughly six kilometres west of Swift Current.

The proposed extension is necessary to supply additional sand and gravel to clients, the bulletin states. Construction will include clearing, grubbing and the removal of overburden. Operation will include screening and transport to clients.

The deadline for public comments is July 25. Municipal Affairs and Environment Minister Andrew Parsons’ decision is due by Aug. 3.
