Longtime Corner Brook businessman and community volunteer Danny Faour has died.

Mr. Faour died last week at the age of 94.

“He contributed a lot to the community and it’s a loss to all of us,” Coun. Bernd Staeben said of Mr. Faour in a brief tribute to him during this week’s pubic meeting of Corner Brook city council.

Born in St. John’s, Mr. Faour moved to Corner Brook at the age of two and, after going to school in Toronto, returned to start up the jewelry store on Broadway that would make his name a prominent one in the city’s business community during the more than 40 years he operated the store.

Not just a successful and respected entrepreneur, Mr. Faour was an active volunteer, involved in The Holy Redeemer Parish’s council and was a member of the Knights of Columbus at a provincial level.

An active skier well into his senior years, he served time as chair of the Corner Brook Ski Carnival, which later became the Corner Brook Winter Carnival. He was a member of the Rotary Club of Corner Brook, having taken on executive positions and was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow for his significant contributions to Rotary.

In 2015, he was recognized for 50 years of involvement with the Rotary Club.

He also willingly gave of his time to the Corner Book Chamber of Commerce, advisory boards of what is now Grenfell Campus, Memorial University and to the Corner Brook Downtown Business Association.

He and his late wife, Freida — a former Corner Brook city councillor who died in 2014, had five children, 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Mr. Faour’s funeral service took place Tuesday morning.
