Egg producers get a little excited on the second Friday of October each year — it’s the day they take a crack at jointly promoting the benefits of buying and eating locally produced eggs.
As part of World Egg Day on Friday, egg farmer Alex Smallwood and Kelly Baggs, office manager for the Egg Farmers of Newfoundland and Labrador, set up a display at Sobeys in Paradise to inform customers about the benefits of eating eggs. Of course, a coupon for a free dozen eggs helped hatch a conversation.
Smallwood, manager of Russwood Poultry on Roaches Line, said he enjoys telling people about the health benefits of eggs and explaining the farming process.
“We are just trying to get the information out about how eggs are locally produced, fresh, and a high-quality nutritious food,” Smallwood said. “Consumption is up in Newfoundland and the industry is growing. We’ve had a few new farms start up in the last couple of years.”
Eggs are touted as a top-quality protein food at an affordable price. The proteins contained within eggs are said to be highly important in the development of the brain and muscles, have a key role to play in disease prevention and contribute to general well-being.
