OTTAWA – The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (CEAA) has begun a federal environmental assessment for BP Canada’s Orphan Basin exploration drilling project located 350 kilometres east of Newfoundland in the Atlantic Ocean.
The agency determined an assessment was required for the project after a public comment period on the summary of the project description.
Information about what aspects of the environment may be affected by the project and what should be examined during the environmental assessment are detailed in the environmental impact statement (EIS) guidelines that have been provided to BP Canada.
The company's project in the Orphan Basis is one of five exploration drilling projects located in the Newfoundland and Labrador offshore area currently undergoing environmental assessments.
An application period for participant funding and a future public comment period on the summary of the BP Canada’s EIS will be announced at a later date.
