No one was injured in a potentially fatal incident over the weekend on board the Terra Nova Floating, Production Storage and Offloading vessel — located about 350 kilometres east-southeast off the coast of Newfoundland.
It happened Saturday, while workers on the vessel were completing a routine lift using an air hoist, which travels on a trolley assembly through the lower turret to the roof of the Quick Connect DisConnect room.
After completing a lift, team members were reattaching a trolley to a crane hook to secure the trolley to its stored position. In the process, a sling, which was holding the trolley, failed, causing the trolley — weighing approximately 200 kgs — to fall about 34 metres onto an enclosure below, according to the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board’s (C-NLOPB) website.
Suncor Energy reported the incident to the C-NLOPB, which is monitoring Suncor’s investigation.
No one was in the area at the time of the incident, as it’s a restricted work area and requires permission for entry.
“Access to the area where the trolley fell was restricted as per our normal safety process for lifting operations,’ Jessica Depencier of Suncor told The Telegram via an email.
The incident had the potential for fatality based on the Dropped Objects Prevention Scheme calculator, the C-NLOPB said.
“Our first priority is the safety of our team and an investigation into the incident is ongoing,” Depencier said.
