Newfoundland Power has announced the appointment of a new president and CEO.
On Tuesday, the electric utility company announced in a news release its board of directors appointed Gary Murray to take the reins from Peter Alteen, who is set to retire effective Aug. 1. Murray was previously Newfoundland Power's vice-president of consumer operations and has been with the company since 2002.
"Gary has been instrumental in building a culture of customer service excellence, operational efficiency and innovative thinking at Newfoundland Power," board chair Ken Bennett said in the release. "These may be uncertain times but under Gary's leadership, the commitment to delivering safe, reliable electricity service, while focusing on the health and safety of employees, customers and our communities, remains stronger than ever."
The news release touted Murray's experience in engineering and utilities and vast knowledge of the provincial electrical system as factors that will benefit Newfoundland Power customers when it comes to reliability and cost management.
Alteen, who has been with the company since 1987, became the interim CEO and president in 2018 when his predecessor, Jocelyn Perry, accepted an appointment as executive vice-president and chief financial officer for Newfoundland Power's parent company Fortis Inc.
"We would like to thank Peter for his significant contributions and wish him the very best in his retirement," Bennett said in the release.
To fill Murray's old job, the board appointed Sean LaCour. He's currently Newfoundland Power's director of operations.
