The Burin, N.L. company Oceanic Releaf has been granted cannabis cultivation licences from Health Canada for standard cannabis growth and processing operations.

"This is a major milestone for Oceanic and an exciting day for Oceanic as we become a vertically integrated cannabis producer,” company president Taylor Giovannini said in a news release. “We are so excited to be able to supply the local market, and beyond, with premium cannabis cultivated right here in our province.”

Oceanic owns a 63,000-square-foot production facility, about a quarter of which will be devoted to growing cannabis hydroponically. The company says it’s equipped with state-of-the-art cultivation equipment and the latest technology surrounding climate control and grow room automation.

Plans call for the eventual use of the entire production facility.

Oceanic, which plans to begin production with five cannabis strains, opened a 2,300-square-foot cannabis store in Burin Bay Arm in December. The new store is the largest cannabis retail store in the area and offers a drive-through option.

Oceanic will also open a store in St. John’s by the end of 2021 and has plans to expand throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.
