After a decade working in the restaurant and catering business, Kyle and Alicia McKenna are opening their own food truck in St. John’s this Saturday at noon.
They’ll operate on the Kings Bridge Road side of St. Thomas Parish.
Johnny & Mae’s – named after Kyle’s grandparents, who he says were a big influence on his food culture – will serve a seasonal-based menu.
They’ll focus on variations of classic sandwiches, such as a fried chicken sandwich. During the summer, they’ll feature menu items such as cod tacos and lobster rolls.
They say their salt beef poutine is also delicious. “You’re going to get a big sandwich, you’re going to get a big side of fries. No one’s going to leave hungry when they come here,” said Alicia.
Her background in bartending means she’ll work the window and cash, while Kyle does the cooking.
“We have a good tag team going – it’s a balance,” said Alicia.
The couple says the food truck scene is evolving in the city; where “food truck” used to be synonymous with “chip truck,” now the options are becoming more diverse.
