The Newfoundland Distillery Company has earned two medals at the 2019 San Francisco World Spirit Competition.
Its Chaga rum was named the best in Canada for this past year. In addition, Aquavit also picked up a medal and the Gunpowder and Rose Rum won a bronze medal.
“Winning the silver medals means that both the Chaga Rum and Aquavit are outstanding in their category,” Peter Wilkins of Newfoundland Distillery Company said in a news release on Tuesday afternoon.
“This is the second year that we have been successful in this competition. In April 2018 our Seaweed Gin won a Double Gold Medal and our Cloudberry Gin won a Silver Medal,” he added.
More than 3,000 entries made it to the San Francisco World Spirit competition.
Chaga Rum is premium spirit made using five-year-old Demerara rum from Guyana that is finely infused in Clarke’s Beach with Chaga harvested from central Newfoundland and honey from Grand Falls-Windsor.
Chaga grows on 40-year-old birch trees and can only be harvested in the winter. The rum captures the flavours and accentuates the earthy notes that bring out hints of truffle, chocolate and coffee balanced by the classic rich notes of the rum held together by a touch of honey.
In addition, Aquavit is the first spirit ever produced in Newfoundland that has been fully grown and legally distilled in the province.
The ingredients come from across the province including the barley grown and dried in Cormac, the honey from Grand Falls-Windsor, the peat and juniper from Clarke’s Beach and a dash of savoury from Mt. Scio in St. John’s.
The Newfoundland Distillery Company is a multiple award-winning craft distillery that launched in May 2017.
The Seaweed Gin and Gunpowder and Rose Rum are also available in Nova Scotia at Nova Scotia Liquor Corp. stores, in Quebec via private order at the SAQ and from May 2019 across Alberta.
