SYDNEY, N.S. — The next in a series of virtual town hall meetings under the direction of the Cape Breton Regional Chamber of Commerce will feature Mayor Cecil Clarke.

The online session, Wednesday at 2 p.m., will be moderated by chamber CEO Kathleen Yurchesyn and will give the Cape Breton Regional Municipality mayor the chance to express his thoughts on the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on the CBRM and the local economy.

“I felt it was important to allow our members to hear directly from our municipality … and hear directly from Mayor Clarke about his thoughts on everything, to kind of get an idea on where his head is at as he also navigates through all this uncertainty,” said Yurchesyn.

“It’s also important to hear his thoughts around what the future holds or what he thinks the future is going to look like and the challenges that we are up against as a municipality and the opportunities, as well, when we start to see the other side of this.”

Virtual town hall participants can also ask the mayor questions, which proved popular when the chamber hosted similar virtual sessions with MP Mike Kelloway and MLA Geoff McLellan in recent weeks.

“It’s a good way to have an open forum and an open conversation in these unusual circumstances where everything is online,” said Yurchesyn.

“For us to be doing this, it is also transparency and giving people like Mayor Clarke an opportunity to have a platform to engage with this audience but also allow for our business community to engage and have a conversation, express concerns, ask questions and provide feedback and suggestions.”

There is a 100-person limit to participate in the virtual town hall. Registration information can be found on the chamber website.

A recording of the session will be available for playback for those who can’t view the live version.
