HOLYROOD, N.L.
There was palpable excitement within the Holyrood council chambers about a new retail development approved during the most recent council meeting.
Council gave unanimous approval to a development application for a retail shopping space at 427 Conception Bay Highway. The location was previously the site of a rubber plant that sat idle for decades before the building was demolished in 2015. The plant was one of many manufacturing projects established in Newfoundland and Labrador shortly after confederation and only managed to stay operational for two years.
The project, referred to in the Notice of Discretionary Use posted on the town website as “The Stores at Holyrood,” would offer retail space for multiple occupants. Mayor Gary Goobie said the new building will be 6,000 square feet.
“I think it’s a welcome addition to that growing area,” he said Tuesday. “I think it’s going to be a tremendous asset and I think it’s going to be a game changer, because now you’re going to see a second building going in that area, and it’s all part of our plan to develop that area as part of our town centre in our town plan and development regulations.”
The mayor went on to thank town staff for the hard work they’ve put in to help make these projects happen in the community.
The project was advertised publically as a discretionary use for the area prior to council approval. Coun. Kevin Costello, chair of the planning and development committee, said no correspondence was received.
The site of the new development is close to where a joint Orange Store and Tim Hortons operation opened earlier this year.
