HEAD: Tailings expansion for Rambler’s Ming mine released from environmental assessment
BAIE VERTE PENINSULA, NL – The provincial government has released Rambler Metals and Mining Canada Ltd.’s proposed expansion of its tailings management facility at the Nugget Pond mill site on the Baie Verte Peninsula from further environmental assessment.
According to an environmental assessment bulletin issued on July 5, Municipal Affairs and Environment Minister Andrew Parsons reviewed the public comments and recommendation from the assessment committee and found the environmental preview report (EPR) to be satisfactory.
There is one condition from government, however.
The company must to enter into a memorandum of understanding with the Department of Municipal Affairs and Environment’s water resources management division for the installation of a real-time water quality/quantity network as determined upon further consultation.
Rambler will also be required to pay all costs associated with the monitoring network and must install it prior to the expansion of the tailings management facility.
The expansion will accommodate tailings from current and future mining operations at Rambler’s Ming copper and gold mine, which has been in production since 2011.
The existing tailings impoundment does not have sufficient volume to contain the expected tailings generated from mining operations during 2019 through 2025.
A new impoundment is proposed for Camp Pond, a fishless body of water close to the mill.
