Each week, Postmedia columnist Chris Selley will summarize the 2019 federal election in 60 seconds. In the first week, the Liberals were in full attack mode until photos of Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau in blackface surfaced. Watch the video or read the transcript below.

The Liberal war room effectively dominated the first week of the campaign by digging up dirt on various Conservative candidates’ unsavoury views and acquaintances. But Time magazine wiped the smirk off their faces on Wednesday when it published a photo of Justin Trudeau in brownface at an event in 2001. And it wasn’t the only time he did it!

Trudeau said he didn’t realize blackface was racist when he was, um, 29 years old, but that he’s very very sorry now.

Speaking of teachers, Quebec has banned them and some other civil servants from wearing hijabs and all four federalist party leaders are trying to disagree with that just strongly enough not to anger any potential voters in Quebec .

Pretty gross.

But we did get some serious policy talk, too, especially from the Conservatives and NDP. Andrew Scheer promised a significant tax cut that he says would save the average family about $850 a year. Jagmeet Singh is taking the opposite approach with a 1% soak-the-rich tax on the net wealth of households worth more than $20 million.

Hopefully we’ll get more substance and less dirt in week two. Probably not.
