Repartee, who have seen national success since the release of their newest album, “All Lit Up,” last spring, are nominated for five awards: FACTOR Album of the Year, Entertainer of the Year, Group of the Year, Molson/Coors Pop/Rock Recording of the Year, SOCAN Songwriter of the Year and Nickel Music Video of the Year for “Dukes,” their first single off the new album. The synth-pop band (Meg Warren, Robbie Brett, Nick Coultas Clarke and Josh Banfield), who are now mostly based in Toronto, are no strangers to the MusicNL awards, having swept them back in 2012, leaving with five trophies.

"We're just so honoured to be recognized at home," Warren said. "The list of nominees is amazing this year and it's incredible to see our names up there with a lot of friends and musicians that we really look up to."
Repartee has some stiff competition this year, including guitarist Duane Andrews, who is also nominated for five awards, many of them in the same categories: FACTOR Album of the Year, Entertainer of the Year, SOCAN Songwriter of the Year, DC Design House Male Artist of the Year and Coast 101.1 Jazz/Blues Artist of the Year for his latest album, “Conception Bay.”
Singer Jordan Coaker is up for five awards in two different musical outfits: rock group Waterfront Fire (with bandmates Ryan Tobin, Ben Thistle, Andrew Boyd and Cody O’Quinn) and acoustic duo Quote the Raven, with Kirsten Rodden-Clarke.
It’s been a huge year for Coaker, who released albums with both groups, broke into musical theatre with TaDa! Events’ version of “Rock of Ages” and was subsequently awarded a scholarship by the production company to study sound recording and production at the College of the North Atlantic.
“I just wanted to play music, so any accolades or any recognition is kind of crazy,” Coaker told The Telegram. “It’s been a transition year. Last year I was still working that full-time job that I didn’t really want to do, didn’t really fit in, and this has been the switch. I think this is at least the beginning of something. I think this is the beginning of the rest of my life.”
Other multiple award nominees this year include Rozalind MacPhail, Pilot to Bombardier, Long Distance Runners, Mick Davis, Hot x Proxy and more.
MusicNL announced the nominees at a Wednesday morning news conference at Fred’s Records in St. John’s, where it also unveiled its new logo and branding, featuring a simplistic, stylized map of the province in multiple colours.
The 2016 MusicNL Awards will be handed out during MusicNL Week Oct. 13-16 in Bonavista.
