Whether you prefer minimal or decadent there’s no debating a salad at lunch is always a good idea. Here are five tasty salad options around the city to take your midday meal to the next level.

1. Julep Kitchen & Cocktails — Bacon and peach salad

Decadent and fresh, Julep’s bacon and peach salad is what your southern dreams are made of. Chef Lawry Deneau sears ripe peaches in Bourbon and salt, then tosses them with Annapolis Valley bacon, baby greens, sharp cheese, and sweet-salty-spicy pralines. The icing on the cake is the ol’ fashioned vinaigrette. A play on the classic drink, Julep’s salad dressing is made with orange zest, Bourbon, and Angostura bitters.

2. enVie: A Vegan Kitchen — Sunflower pesto salad

A plant-based restaurant, enVie makes the chèvre, pesto, and balsamic reduction for their sunflower pesto salad in-house from scratch without using any animal products. The mixed greens, shoots, and herbs in the pesto are all local, and the chèvre is made from Acadiana soy.

3. The Ostrich Club — Radish and guanciale salad

With a seasonal patio, The Ostrich Club is tucked into the beautiful strip of shops in the Hydrostone Market. A new salad offering on their menu is the radish and gunaciale salad. With mixed greens, radishes three ways, torched guanciale, and hazelnut milk dressing it’s an ideal lunch when balancing the cusp of summer and autumn.

4. Stone’s Throw Patio — Rocket salad

Chef Trevor Simms’ dedication to sourcing local, sustainable, and local ingredients is evident throughout the Stone’s Throw and Harbourstone Sea Grill and Pour House menus. The rocket salad with summer arugula, apple cider vinaigrette, goat cheese, toasted corn, tobacco shallots, and raspberries is a great choice for lunch while sitting on a sunny patio on the Halifax boardwalk.

5. Bistro Le Coq — Salade de canard confit

A focus on classic French food and overall French flair means duck confit is sure to make an appearance on Bistro Le Coq’s menu, and what better place than a salad with mesclun and baby arugula. Topped off with roasted hazelnuts, beets, and blue cheese dressing, it’s sure to make you say, “ooh la la.“
