Canadian singer Grimes has allegedly pioneered a treatment for all that eye strain caused by late-night Netflix watching and social media scrolling and it’s, well, something. Either that, or she’s an epic troll.
In an Instagram post published late Monday night, the pop star claimed she no longer sees blue light.
“I have also eliminated all blue light from my vision through an experimental surgery that removes the top film of my eyeball and replaces it with an orange ultra-flex polymer that my friend and I made in the lab this past winter as a means to cure seasonal depression,” she wrote.
According to the Canadian Association of Optometrists , blue light is defined as the shortest wavelength on the visible light spectrum and hence produces the most energy. It mainly comes from sunlight and, in our digital era, electronic devices such as laptops and phones. Too much exposure can damage the retina, cause eye-strain, affect mood and contribute to cataract formation.
Grimes, who is also dating tech billionaire Elon Musk, has not mentioned when and where the “experimental surgery” was carried out, nor what it’s like to see the world short of an entire wavelength.
The announcement is part of a lengthier account of her, ahem, “training regimen” in a post announcing her partnership with adidas by Stella McCartney. Grimes is the face of the “sustainable” collection. Grimes’ routine, she explained, includes astro-gliding, sword fighting for a couple of hours and a half-hour session of screaming followed by a cup of honey tea and humidifier on at night.
Perplexed fans are not sure what to make of the post, but the prevailing assumption is that Grimes must be joking. However, with her connection to Musk, and all of the strange anti-aging regimens proliferating in Silicon Valley , her post is almost plausible, and some have chosen to take her at her word.
Others seem to have taken the singer at her word.
The Instagram post comes just as Stella McCartney unveiled an autumn/winter Adidas campaign, showcasing eco-friendly fashion with Grimes as the central figure.
