CORNER BROOK - Mi’kmaq artists and craftspeople have new venue for showcasing their work.
Experience Qalipu, the Qalipu First Nation’s tourism division, is partnering with the gift shop at the Deer Lake Regional Airport to provide retail space to Mi’kmaq artists and craftspeople so that they can reach visitors from around the world.
Brent Marsden, the owner of the gift shop, said in a news release that he is looking forward to showing visitors another aspect of Newfoundland culture.
Tara Saunders, director of community development with the band, said traditional and modern arts and crafts act as a catalyst to cultural revival and artists and craftspeople play an invaluable role in preserving and promoting traditional skills.
“Promoting Indigenous products not only creates economic growth for our people, but also helps to preserve important elements of who we are for many generations to come.”
Mi’kmaq artists or craftspeople, including those who are not members of the band, who are interested in selling their items at the gift shop can email Alex Antle for more information at [email protected].
