Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens, bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens, brown paper packages tied up with strings, these are a few of my favourite things …
Now that I’m confident you’ll have tunes from “The Sound of Music” stuck in your head for the rest of the day, let’s jump into a few of my real favourite things. As the summer begins to wind down, here is a short round-up of my August obsessions.
“GLOW” Season 3: On August 9, the ever-so-thoughtful Netflix sent a notification to my account that made my day. “Now Available: Season 3 of GLOW.” For those of you who aren’t familiar, “GLOW” is a Netflix Original about the 1980s women’s professional wrestling circuit, Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling. Featuring “Community’s” Alison Brie, “GLOW” is a hilarious comedy/drama that somehow tugs at your heartstrings amidst all of the gimmicks and glamour of women’s wrestling.
My summer has been devoted to dresses. Office dresses, lounge dresses, I even took it back to the 1800s and threw on a nightgown a few times. Yes, for those of us who wear dresses, it’s common sense that they would be a summer go-to. But for me, it’s not just because they’re flowy, light, and comfortable; this summer has been so hectic that the thought of trying to match tops and pants was just out of the question. So, dresses are the perfect way to look like you put some thought into your outfit without actually, well, putting any thought into it.
I’m not proud that I’m about to admit to spending five dollars on a drink, but here we go. I’ve never been a coffee drinker, so for me, a trip to Starbucks typically meant wasting extra money on a tea I could have made at home. But then I fell in love with their Refreshers and haven’t looked back. My drink obsession of the month is Starbucks’ Mango Dragonfruit Refresher with coconut milk. It’s delicious and brightly coloured and I have to do everything in my power to stop myself from ordering one every day. But if you’re looking for a treat to cool you down this summer, I would highly recommend giving it a try!
My favourite summer activity this year has been paddle boarding, hands down. My dad and I each bought a board at the beginning of the summer, and it’s the perfect way for us to spend some time together and get a little exercise at the same time. Although I turn red in seconds, I like to soak up the sun as much as the next person but heading out for a few hours on the boards somehow feels more productive than laying on my deck. If you’re interested in trying it out but aren’t ready to buy a board of your own, there are some great rental opportunities here in Cape Breton, and surely across the rest of the Maritimes as well.
I hope you spend the rest of your summer watching, wearing, drinking, and doing your favourite things, and maybe testing out a few of mine. Soak up that last bit of sun and get ready to transition into the best season of all folks!
