ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Milk: It does a community good.

In the wake of in-class instruction suspended throughout the province due to the recent COVID-19 outbreak, the School Lunch Association had to figure out what to do with the over 5 thousand litres of milk it had on hand.

So it partnered with the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District (NLESD) and the School Milk Foundation to collect and thousands of cartons of milk to be donated to area food banks.

Over the course of two weeks — with the assistance of the Community Food Share Association — 442 crates of milk containing 21,263 lunch-size 250-millilitre cartons, were delivered to over 20 food banks.

In addition, more than a dozen non-profit and community-based organizations, as well as front-line health care workers at the Mount Pearl COVID-19 testing site, also received a sizeable milk donation.

“We cannot say thanks enough to the staff at the NLESD for their swift action and efforts with the heavy lifting and distribution over the past two weeks," John Finn, Executive Director of the School Lunch Association, stated in a release.
