Sitting in the parking lot of a St. John's bank with a cheque worth $10,000 was the last thing Dale Mercer expected to be doing on Feb. 13.
She was getting ready to deposit the money she and five of her sisters — from Horwood in central Newfoundland — had won during two appearances on Family Feud Canada.
"It was a phenomenal time," said Dale of her family's experience on the show. "We had a lot of fun and they treated us like gold.
"We met a lot of other families."
Mercer was joined on the show by her sisters Wavey Mercer, Gertie Hodder, Hilda Moss and Geraldine Bennett. A sixth Mercer sister, Joyce Mercer-Miller, was also there as the team’s alternate.
"They say I've become a meme!"
Over two episodes, the Horwood family sang songs, had a healthy rapport with host Gerry Dee and gave some memorable answers. Especially when Dale said she'd feed someone she didn't like to a polar bear for dinner.
"They say I've become a meme," she said with a laugh.
Heading into the show, the sisters were adamant on representing their hometown of Horwood and paying tribute to their beloved older sister Jean who died suddenly 13 years earlier.
In between the first and second parts of their first show, Geraldine got the chance to tell the country about Jean and what the woman the sisters called the matriarch meant to them.
They each wore pink roses in a tribute to Jean.
The Mercers didn't get to 'Fast Money' on their second episode; however, they had more than enough fun to make up for it.
"We had a great time," said Dale. "It was exciting."
Their appearance on the Canadian version of the popular American game show has made them celebrities. Each sister held a watch party with their friends and coworkers, while social media lit up with messages of support.
Their hometown held a celebration dinner in their honour Feb. 14.
