ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — The annual Ocean Ranger memorial prayer service took place this morning at St. Pius X Church in St. John’s.

Today marks the 37th anniversary of the Ocean Ranger’s sinking off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador when 84 lives were tragically lost on this day in 1982.

“Newfoundlanders and Labradorians will forever remember the loss of 84 lives in the Ocean Ranger tragedy,” said Premier Dwight Ball in a news release.

“An anniversary which is not only engrained in the history of our province, but that also serves as a somber reminder of the risks people take while working offshore in an effort to provide for their families. We will continue to place significant emphasis on providing a safe and healthy environment for our offshore workersI extend my deepest sympathies and send my thoughts and prayers to the families and friends affected by the loss of loved ones.”
