It is time to make those New Year’s resolutions, so why not make yours include becoming a library patron? Does your resolution include reading more? Expanding your mind? Trying new things? Getting fit? Learning your family history? No matter your resolution, the public library is here to help you achieve your goals and do it for free!

The public library is quickly changing from a quiet space to an active collaborative community hub with the primary purpose of connecting you to knowledge of all kinds! That is why a library is the best place to begin your journey into the New Year. All you need is a library card.

A library card grants patrons access to thousands of resources across the province. No matter where you live, as long as you have a library card you have access to our provincial collection!

Have you considered checking out our non-fiction book collection? It is a great place to start learning something new. We have great cookbooks, self-help books, fitness guides, how-to’s, biographies, and so much more! Or maybe you are more inclined to immerse yourself in some fiction? Worlds of adventure, romance, thrillers, and mysteries await you! We have an extensive collection of books, no matter what subject or genre you are looking for. If there is something you want, check your local branch and if it is not there, we can send it over from another location. You can also check out our online collection on Overdrive for a great selection of eBooks and eAudiobooks! Visit us at nlpl.ca and check out our awesome digital library!

Maybe this is the year you will watch all the blockbuster movies you have missed out on! Did you know the public library has the largest collection of DVDs across the province? Whether it is the newest Marvel, indie, or rom-com, the library can take care of all of your movie-watching needs! And don’t forget about our extensive television collection as well. Brush up on all the past episodes of Game of Thrones before the new season starts, or get cozy with British mystery!

Want to try something new but don’t know where to start? The library is a perfect place to dip your toes without getting in over your head, especially through our programming! Public libraries across the province provide patrons with life-long learning opportunities that are free and informative. These programs may include learning about healthy nutrition, physical fitness, painting, knitting, conversation circles, tutoring, connecting with board games, dance, and financial information sessions, the list goes on! Follow your closest library on Facebook, or check us out on Twitter (@NLPubLibraries) for up-to-date information about our programs.

So what do you need to become a library patron? It is simple, really. Pop in to your nearest public library with a piece of ID. The staff at the circulation desk will be able to set you up with a card at no cost (if you are a new user!) and they will explain everything you need to know! Not sure where the nearest branch is? No worries, our website has a list of all 94 public libraries across Newfoundland and Labrador. You can also sign-up for your library card online at nlpl.ca as well and we will mail your card to you.

It has never been easier to reap the benefits of the public library, so ring in the New Year with the world at your fingertips and get a library card. See you in the branches.

Leigha Chiasson-Locke is the St. John’s Regional Librarian with the Newfoundland & Labrador Public Libraries.
