“Days get colder, snow gets deeper, hearts get closer. The winter season is the perfect time to spend with those we love. So grab a cup, snuggle up, and take a moment to share in the joy of simply being together.”

Those words are written on every cuddle blanket tag, and are fabulous thoughts for February.

What is a cuddle blanket? It has to do with size. A regular throw measures about 50x60 inches and comfortably covers one person sitting. A twin blanket is about 70”x90” and there is too much material to throw easily over one or even two people. A cuddle blanket measures 80”x 40” and is just perfect for two people to sit cozily together, covered and snuggly.

Demdaco is the manufacturer of cuddle blankets and other lovely things, and their mission statement is “Lift the spirit.” Founders Demi and Dave believe being in business is about more than financial goals. It’s about connecting with other humans, lifting spirits with comfort, celebration or warm words. They have curated a group of artists to help design and craft items to do just that: lift the spirit. It may be a simple piece of wall art, a mug with something funny on it, or a shawl that feels like a hug. Something to make you smile, make you laugh, or give you comfort in a tough time.

Although the company is based in the United States, their artists are from all over North America and include Sharon Nowlan from Pictou, Nova Scotia. Yes, one of our own! Nowlan is best known for her small beach stone images, framed, each one a captured moment in pebbles. She has begun to use sea glass, bits of driftwood, sand and other found objects in her work as well. She works as a designer for Demdaco, creating pieces that are reproduced to artisan quality. The Sharon Nowlan Collection is sold all over North America. Her passion is to “say as much as possible with as little as possible.” Her pebble art was inspired by her son, who collected the first small smooth stones she used, and by her proximity to the ocean and the land.

The cuddle blanket is meant to lift winter spirits. It is another great Demdaco product, made in India, 100 per cent brushed acrylic, woven into cozy comfort for two (and a furry friend). It is perfect for couples to enjoy a home movie night, together with a shared bowl of popcorn. Or for a mum or dad to snuggle in with the kids and some hot cocoa after an afternoon of snowman building. You get the idea, it’s comfort in cuddling. Valentine’s is approaching. Maybe a cuddle blanket is the best thing to share with someone you love.

Happy cuddling!
