CORNER BROOK, N.L. — Grenfell theatre is offering two opportunities to take in a few of playwright Anton Chekhov’s major plays next week.
Students in the second-, third- and fourth-year of the Grenfell Campus theatre program in Corner Brook will present “The Cherry Orchard” on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and “Uncle Vanya” on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
“The Cherry Orchard” chronicles a noblewoman's return to her family estate, after a five-year absence to escape troubling memories of her son's death, as the family scrambles to retain a vision of gentility amidst a climate of huge social and economic transition.
“The Cherry Orchard” is directed by Mary Vingoe, with costume design by Vickie Marston, set by Roy Hansen-Robitschek and lights by Harry Tibbo.
“Uncle Vanya,” or “Scenes from Country Life,” is both gut-wrenchingly sad and hilariously funny.
Its characters are admirable and despicable, selfish, narcissistic, prone to depression and whining about their lot in life, but also capable of love and passion and self-sacrifice.
“Uncle Vanya” is directed by Michael Waller, with costume design by Vickie Marston, set by Roy Hansen-Robitschek and lights by Harry Tibbo.
Showtime for each play is 8 p.m. and tickets are available at the door, with a discounted rate for those choosing to attend both plays.
