Some students in the Northeast Kings Education Centre (NKEC) grad class of 2020 have lofty goals for the future.

Grad Katherine Myer’s career plans are out of this world.

Myers, who earned an impressive list of medals, certificates, honours and bursaries, including the prestigious Governor General’s Medal for highest academic achievement, credits her experience at NKEC for preparing her for the future. Especially for giving her the “first look at the math that makes the world go around and the essay structure that I will using for years to come.”

The foundation built at NKEC will come in handy when she begins a bachelor of science in astrophysics at St. Mary’s University in September.

“I’ve wanted to study astrophysics for years and have always known I would be part of a new generation of women in STEM (the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics),” Myers told SaltWire recently. “I want to work someday for a space corporation like the Canadian Space Agency as a researcher or otherwise, and I plan eventually on pursuing a masters or doctorate degree.”

The immediate challenge facing Myers, and many other graduates will be to find a summer job during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Honours student Matthew Kean also enjoyed the math and science programs at NKEC and is looking forward to studying engineering at Dalhousie University.

“My involvement in Space Balloon Club and Mathletes let me delve deeper into my interests and made it clear that engineering was what I wanted to do,” Kean said recently.

Olivia Rappoldt said her fondest memories were made on the bus with her senior girls soccer teammates and coaches, as they travelled throughout the province.

“I remember we just finished playing in Cape Breton for provincials, and on the way back in the bus our coach would sound off this air horn every kilometre. It was annoying at the time as we were all tired, but looking back at it, everyone around me made my high school experience just a little better,” Rappoldt remembers.

She plans to study nursing at Dalhousie and says the advanced placement courses offered by NKEC helped prepare her for that.

Senior male athlete of the year William Watts hopes to continue his success in track and field when he pursues a bachelor of science degree at the University of New Brunswick and runs for the track team there.

“I will always remember the memories made at NKEC, as well as the countless social and life lessons that the school taught me. And of course, critical skills such as building immunity to the smell of cow manure.”
