SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — Even though 2020 has been a tough year for many, Santa Claus will not deter from making his rounds and leaving gifts under the tree for children who would otherwise have nothing.

Thanks to the seventh annual Summerside Cops for Christmas toy drive for the Salvation Army fundraiser.

Summerside Police Chief Dave Poirier said the event, which ran at Credit Union Place, is an opportunity to give children and families who are struggling a happy Christmas and positive interaction with law enforcement officials.

"We didn't know what to expect with COVID-19, but as you can see with the toys filling the van, the community has been very generous," he said, motioning to the great variety of unwrapped new items.

"A lot of children came in this morning and gave up their Christmas gifts, and (Summerside Police) are blown away by the kindness shown," he continued, while acknowledging the steady stream of traffic that began as early as 8:30 a.m.

Poirier added, "This year, there is a greater need because many families and individuals face unemployment and financial hardships with the ongoing health crisis, so we need donations more than ever. The Salvation Army is also accepting monetary donations on-site such as gift cards, which are great for teenagers."

Police officers volunteered their time, with many new members, including one officer who worked throughout the night to then come in and help for the event's duration.

The gifts collected will be distributed by the Salvation Army.
