Glace Bay Santa Claus Parade cancelled

Blair Slade’s Happy Holidays float was absent from this year’s Sydney Santa parade. The Glace Bay businessman and community booster said the float was designed for a nighttime parade and after this year’s rule changes he opted not to reassemble the float for a daytime event.

GLACE BAY, N.S. — Pandemic associated uncertainties have led to the cancellation of this year's Glace Bay Santa Claus parade.

Dave MacKeigan, president of Bay it Forward, said an increase in cases of COVID-19 on the mainland, meant there was no way of knowing if cases could be identified in Cape Breton by the time the parade was to be held.

“We thought we better cancel now rather than have people put a lot of work into making floats that may not be able to be used,” he said.

Earlier plans were to have a drive-thru reverse parade where floats would be parked and set up in a way where the public would be able to drive by to view them.
