Prince Edward Island singer/songwriter KINLEY, well-known for her heartfelt and personal storytelling, most notably in her award-winning song, Microphone, has released the music video for her song, Tuesday’s Child, from her second album, self-titled KINLEY.
Back to school might look a little different this year, but the same anxieties around fitting in and bullying are always there. Tuesday’s Child talks about the challenges of growing up, feeling confident and navigating the social landscape of high school.
The music video features an exclusive verse from Vince The Messenger (Daniel Butterfield) and a candid conversation between KINLEY and local P.E.I. artists, Butterfield, 22, and Zaneta Ambassa, 16.
Between lots of laughs, the three share their astrological signs and their experiences at Charlottetown Rural High School, which all three have attended or are currently attending.
KINLEY also asks the two about how they navigate bullies, cliques, fitting in and learning how to be true to oneself in the midst of it all.
“I’ve heard that it’s like, “Don’t try to find yourself, try and create yourself” so I try to go by that” says Zaneta, who is in Grade 11.
With everything that has been happening in the world over the last few months, KINLEY felt like there was more she could do to share the voices of others, especially the voices of Black, Indigenous and People of Colour (BIPOC) artists.
“As someone who spent most of my career in the Canadian folk scene, where almost everyone around me looked like me, I knew that I could leverage this spotlight; I knew that it was time for me to share the microphone again,” said KINLEY, when asked why she included the interview portion to her music video.
“Vince and Zanetta are both two strong voices in my community who are achieving excellence, and I have admired them both for so long. I feel lucky to have Vince featured on this song because he is one of my favourite lyricists in P.E.I. and to have had the opportunity to interview two incredibly talented, passionate and very wise young artists. I wish I had some of their advice when I was going back to school.”

KINLEY
- KINLEY (Kinley Dowling) is a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Charlottetown.
- She was well-known as a member of Newfoundland’s indie ensemble Hey Rosetta! for 10 years. She now writes and records her own material, as well as writes and records string tracks for many artists in her home studio.
- Her second solo album, KINLEY, was released on Feb. 21, 2020. She released her first solo debut album, Letters Never Sent, in October 2016.
- She is one of the most sought-after string players when violin and/or viola are required for a studio album. She has recorded on over 70 records over the span of her career.
Zaneta Ambassa
- A musician and filmmaker, Zaneta Ambassa is an incredible force. At 16, she is a singer, songwriter, filmmaker and activist.
- In 2017, then 12-year-old Zaneta showcased her film, Muted, at the Toronto International Film Festival's Kids Jump Cuts Young Filmmakers Showcase.
- She has recorded some of her music in a professional studio.
- She was a speaker at the recent Black Lives March in Charlottetown, with 10,000 people in attendance.
Vince the Messenger
- Rapper Daniel Butterfield (Vince The Messenger) is one of Charlottetown’s newest and most influential musicians in the Island’s hip-hop scene.
- Coming off winning urban recording of the year at the 2019 Music P.E.I. Awards for his debut full-length album, Self Sabotage, he plans to continue spitting out meaningful lyrics and turning heads.
- The music of this 22-year-old artist, rapper and director is characterized by its focus of empowerment and philosophical thought. It carries underlying elements of golden era hip-hop but brings a refreshing, abstract feeling and approach to the sound.
- He has a style that caters to a diverse audience. Often rapping over boom-bap inspired beats with modern flair, with every verse, he portrays his innermost thoughts, feelings and ideas.
