Port Morien Polar Dip making a different splash

Some of the more than 75 participants of the eighth annual Port Morien Polar Dip take the icy plunge into the frosty waters of the Cape Breton fishing village’s sheltered harbour. Another 250 or so people stayed on shore watching and supporting those taking part in the popular New Year’s Day event. This year’s dip had an international flavour about a dozen young foreign students opted to participate in a New Year’s Day tradition that is popular across Canada.

PORT MORIEN, N.S. — A time-honoured tradition will look a bit different this year.

Organizers of the Port Morien Polar Dip are inviting participants to ”Splash in their Bubble” due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This year’s event, which will run from Dec. 15 to Jan. 1, once again will raise money for the Port Morien branch of the Royal Canadian Legion and Hospice Cape Breton.

“Since we can’t host a large event, we are going to do a virtual polar splash,” said Katherine Snow, a member of the organizing committee. “Participants can be creative, have fun and ‘splash in their bubble.’ Hop in your kids’ pool, keep tradition and head to the beach or soak yourself with the hose. The options are endless — and could also be hilarious.”

Pledge sheets and tax receipts are available.

Teams of a maximum of 10 participants can win bragging rights and their name on a trophy, and there will be prizes for individual participants.

The organizers will be posting videos and money raised on their social media channels.
