Shane Snook was taken completely by surprise on Thursday when he was presented with a Governor General’s Academic Certificate.

The presentation took place at recognition ceremonies for graduates of College of the North Atlantic’s Bay St. George Campus held at the Stephenville Arts and Culture Centre.

Snook, who is a Flat Bay resident, knew he did well with his marks, not coming home with a mark under 96 per cent.

The Governor General award goes to a student who scores the highest average in his or her graduation class.

Snook graduated with a diploma from a two-year office administration (executive) course.

After completing the first-year certificate program, his instructors convinced him to come back and do the second-year diploma program.

Snook already has a local job offer and, once it’s confirmed, he looking to go right at it.

He said some parts of the program were easy but others were more challenging and his partner Marcella Williams was a great help during the process.

“A lot of the program suited my aptitudes. Receiving the Governor General Award felt great – it was very reassuring to be recognized for the time and effort put into it,” Snook said.

In addition to that award, during the graduation ceremonies, Snook was also presented a President’s Medal and named to the Honours Society.

At a recent awards ceremony in April, he was presented a Business Administration Instructors Scholarship and a Fry Family Foundation President’s Leadership Achievement Award.

He will receive the Governor General medal, that’s part of the award, in the fall.
