ST. LAWRENCE, NL – The Town of St. Lawrence is being considered as a possible location for the CBC Television show “Still Standing.”
The show, hosted by Newfoundlander Jonny Harris, visits small Canadian towns and communities that have experienced tough financial times. It also highlights residents of the communities that continue to live there.
Mayor Paul Pike told members of council on Tuesday, March 6 that a researcher from the show contacted him requesting additional information about the community.
“They look at communities that have a rich history, culture (and) heritage,” said Pike. “They come in and do (a production) on what makes this town unique, the historical significance. They’re keenly interested in soccer in St. Lawrence and what that brought to the community.”
Pike added the show would also focus on the talents of some local residents, as well as the town’s history in mining and the fishery.
He said being considered for the show presents an interesting opportunity for the town.
“It would bring a lot of the things that St. Lawrence has to offer to the forefront,” said Pike. “They were really interested in the (history of) the Pollux and Truxtun – they weren’t aware of the historical significance of that, so a lot of the things they are looking at and are appealing to their show, we have in our town, so that’s certainly something to be excited about.”
A representative with "Still Standing" contacted The Southern Gazette on March 15 to explain that not all towns contacted end up going on the be featured on the program.
