Quilts of Valour Sew Day

Supporting injured Canadian Armed Forces members with quilts of comfort. Join us from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the St. John’s Military Family Resource Centre (145 Churchill Ave.) for a day of quilting. You are asked to kindly bring along any red/white/cream/yellow fabrics, or any colours you have, to incorporate into the quilts. You will need your sewing machine and the usual sewing and quilting tools. We will have irons/ironing boards/cutting tables and a few sewing machines on hand in case yours isn’t portable. Tea and coffee will be available during the day. There is a fridge to store your lunch. Join us for as long as you can on our sew day. For further information, contact [email protected].

On Sunday, Feb. 2, Queen’s College (210 Prince Philip Dr.) will open its doors to the public. As the oldest institute for higher education in the province, the college boasts a rich history and a growing student body. Today, it is an affiliate of Memorial University of Newfoundland and is located at the corner of Prince Philip Drive and Allandale Road. From 2-4 p.m., come share a cuppa with our provost, faculty, alumni and current students. There will also be tours of our space and an opportunity to learn about our current programs. L'Arche Avalon is a local charitable organization dedicated to the establishment of L'Arche homes and communities. Our core members are adults with intellectual disabilities. In L’Arche homes, core members and their assistants live together in family-like settings, where spiritual and social well-being are promoted and supported. Spiritual expressions takes place from 3-4 p.m. at Pleasant View Towers, west tower, in their community room next to the chapel. Just walk straight after you come in the entrance. You are welcome to join us and see the various ways in which we experience and express our spirituality. Take an hour out of your busy week to join us for a time of quiet reflection, song and discussion.

Presented by the Newfoundland & Labrador Folk Arts Society, Folk Night at The Ship is St. John’s oldest continually running event (started in 1974) and regularly draws a sizeable crowd each Wednesday night.
