What's happening today and Thursday in and around St. John's

Colliding Black Holes — groundbreaking observations during the last four years have confirmed Einstein’s general relativity and revolutionized astrophysics. Gravitational wave astronomers now hear a black hole merger almost every week. They’ve heard black holes eat neutron stars, and neutron stars collide to form new black holes. Radio astronomers have even taken a picture of the event horizon. In a public lecture on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Johnson Geo Centre, Ivan Booth of Memorial University’s department of mathematics and statistics will discuss these amazing observations and preview what’s still to come. Spoiler: it’s only going to get better!

Public lecture

7 p.m.
Health Inequality in Children
The odds that a child is healthy, happy and doing well in school all improve as social class rises. This social pattern tracks strongly into adulthood and defines health inequalities throughout life. In Canada, there are major differences in the rates of some illnesses and a 10-year gap in life expectancy across socioeconomic conditions. Internationally, child and youth health vary depending on economic wealth and inequality. A public lecture at the Bruneau Centre by Dr. Frank Elgar, alumnus of Memorial University and a professor at McGill University’s Institute for Health and Social Policy, will take a look at those differences. Using research on poverty, inequality, bullying and corporal punishment, Elgar will examine the social and moral implications of health inequality in early life, the policy choices that shape opportunities to be healthy and potential consequences of inaction. Admission is free, and all are welcome. Limited free parking is available in Lot 17. A reception will follow.

Learn how to identify common issues, the truth behind common myths, how to hire qualified contractors and what to avoid. Furlan is an artisan who has never met a window he couldn't fix.
