DUNTARA, NL – One of the most important steps in planning the Bonavista Biennale has been finalized.
The curatorial team for the 2019 edition of the contemporary visual art exhibition was announced on Wednesday, March 7.
Joining artistic director and curator Catherine Beaudette will be guest curators David Diviney and Matthew Hills.
Diviney is curator of Modern and Contemporary Art of the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia in Halifax, while Hills is the director of the Grenfell Art Gallery in Corner Brook.
According to a news release from 2 Rooms Contemporary Art Projects, which organizes the Biennale, the curators will be selecting a broad representation of contemporary visual artists from across Canada with particular focus on the North Atlantic seaboard for next year’s event.
“It’s a privilege to be working with two talented curators who bring their extensive knowledge and experience to a project that renews itself with each installment, adding a fresh perspective to the curatorial vision and discourse,” said Beaudette, who is also the founder and executive director of 2 Rooms, which is based out of a restored fisherman’s saltbox house built in 1881 in Duntara and includes an art gallery, museum and artist residency.
Bonavista Biennale 2019 will build on the format of the 2017 event by once again creating a large-scale, multi-site exhibition in a variety of non-traditional gallery spaces spread throughout communities and the landscape.
Bonavista Biennale 2017 was recently chosen for Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador’s cultural tourism award for innovative pursuit of cultural expression.
"I am thrilled to be collaborating on the upcoming Bonavista Biennale. Newfoundland is a special place, uniquely positioned in the world,” said Hills. “The Biennale is an innovative platform that activates Newfoundland's rich history and culture to engage local residents, regional, national and international visitors with the creative possibilities flowing from our province.”
Exhibition dates, artists, sites and ancillary events will be announced at a later date, the release indicated.
