St. John’s-based musician Florian Hoefner holds the $5,000 grant he was awarded by the Montreal Jazz Festival along with the Stingray Rising Star Award late last week.

Florian Hoefner won the 2015 award for “Newfound Jig,” as well as his entire body of work. Recorded last December, Hoefner says “Newfound Jig” is heavily influenced by local traditional music. It will appear on his upcoming third album, recently recorded in New York and set to be released in January.

“Newfound Jig” was determined by a jury of five music industry professionals to be the best composition presented for this year’s TD Grand Jazz Award. Ten Canadian artists competed for the award, which went to the Rachel Terrien Quintet of Quebec. As winner of the rising star prize, Hoefner received a $5,000 grant as well as airplay on Stingray Music.
