Many played it safe on Oscars red carpet in whites, neutrals

There were bold reds and classic whites, warrior-worthy golds and playful pops of pink and purple on the Oscars red carpet. But the fashion takeaway Sunday seemed more about keeping the clothes out of the way so the conversation could turn to pressing matters.

Tiffany Haddish chose a traditional Eritrean dress to honour her late father. Twitter loved it and Haddish beamed as she strutted on the carpet.

Whites and neutrals were prevalent, including looks worn by Margot Robbie, Jane Fonda, Mary J. Blige and Laura Dern. All the neutrals made the bright colour even poppier. Eiza Gonzalez and Greta Gerwig were in yellow. Jennifer Garner and Nicole Kidman wore royal blue.

The reds were led by Allison Janney in Reem Acra and Meryl Streep in Christian Dior.
