If you’re frustrated by jiggling thighs or love handles, the solution might be as simple as freezing the fat away.
Medical Aesthetician Aimee Rowe runs Nuderm Skin Care Clinic in St. John’s, where they offer a CoolSculpting treatment that targets stubborn fat without surgery or down-time.
“Basically, if it’s pinchable, you can freeze it,” says Rowe. “The cold is able to target fat cells and crystalize them, and then your body naturally processes the fat and eliminates the dead cells.”
More than 7,000,000 CoolSculpting procedures have been performed worldwide, including celebrities who want to appear more toned and tightened.
Rowe says women and men like to target their double chins, and those travelling to a sunny destination often target their arms or abdomens. Brides will come in to have their back fat targetted if they’ll be wearing a strapless wedding gown.
Nuderm Skin Care Clinic was the first in Newfoundland and Labrador to offer the CoolSculpting treatment. They’ve been using the technology for three years now, and they’re still the only clinic in the province to employ a CoolSculpting University graduate. They’re No. 1 in the region and consistently in the Top 20 in eastern Canada.
Rowe says CoolSculpting is the only Health Canada-cleared procedure to use controlled cooling to safely target diet- and exercise-resistant fat. It’s completely non-surgical and non-invasive.
Clients start by coming in for a consultation to determine which areas they’d like to focus on and how much it will cost. Rowe says Nuderm offers an interest-free payment plan that makes the treatment really affordable.
Clients pose for a “Before” photo at the start of their first session, rather than doing a weigh-in, since fat itself doesn’t weigh much. Rowe says it makes more sense to compare their “Before” with an “After” photo later on to see the changes in their physique.
Once the designated area is marked using a template, Rowe says they use pre-treatment skin wipes and gel pads containing propylene glycol to protect the area. The treatments take between 35 and 75 minutes on average, including a two-minute massage at the end of each treatment to push around crystallized fat cells for a more even distribution.
“New clients ask us if it’s going to hurt, and it doesn’t. It’s just a little uncomfortable for the first 10 minutes,” says Rowe. “There’s no down-time afterwards. I went to the gym the same day I had my arms done!”
During their CoolSculpting treatment, Rowe says clients relax in the treatment rooms watching Netflix or Crave while they munch on lunch or snacks. They’re welcome to bring friends in, if they’d like, to keep them company.
Some clients believe they see a difference in just two weeks, but Rowe says it typically takes 1-3 months to see the full results. Clients can opt for a second or third treatment two months as soon as 30 days after a previous treatment, but many only require a single treatment to get the sleeker, more sculpted results they wanted.
“We have a high client satisfaction rate. People are usually very surprised by how well it works,” says Rowe. “We’re always happy to chat with anyone who’d like to learn more about the process.”
