In a year that saw people spending more time at home, homeowners are choosing to dive into DIY projects to update their living space. Among the most popular projects is a kitchen update, with more homeowners choosing to repaint rather than replace cabinets.

Compared to last year at this time, the Atlantic Canada Benjamin Moore Paint Shop network has seen sales of Advance, Benjamin Moore’s ultimate cabinet paint, nearly double.

“Advance has really caught on with homeowners during the pandemic,” says Burnside Paint Shop store manager Cathy Fox. “People are discovering that it’s a really affordable way to update a kitchen and much easier than they’d expect as a DIY project. With a base coat of Benjamin Moore’s Stix primer, you really can repaint just about any surface. Advance works for furniture, trim and, of course, cabinets.”

For those who need step-by-step help with their cabinet painting job, the Paint Shop is finding new ways to help people directly in their home, including virtual decorator consults and live Facebook ‘how-to’ events.

“Our Facebook live event for painting cabinets was really fun. It was amazing to see how many people tuned in and the great questions they wanted answered,” says Caroline Clarke, Production Manager for the Paint Shop’s marketing department. “I’m no DIY expert, but I repainted my entire kitchen in the Spring last year when we had our first Covid lockdown. All you need is cabinet cleaner, a brush, a roller and some sandpaper.”

Advance is available in 3500 Benjamin Moore colours, more than enough choice to match any design scheme.

“A lot of people have kitchen cabinets in a natural wood look, like oak, that dates back to the ’90s,” says Fox. “They know they need an update, but are hesitant to paint over the wood. At the same time, they don’t want to spend the money for a complete cabinet replacement. With Benjamin Moore, you’re getting a product you know is going to have that great, long-lasting colour and Advance cures to an enamel-like finish so it’ll look great for years.”

As to the growing popularity of painting kitchen cabinets, Bay Roberts Paint Shop manager Jennifer McNeil says there’s no better endorsement than hearing from a friend or family member who has had success with their own cabinet project.

“Word of mouth is one thing that I think is really driving this trend,” says McNeil. “As one person tries Advance and has great success with it, they’re posting their pictures online and telling their friends.”

While classic whites remain the top choices for kitchen cabinets, people are also branching out to other colours to add a personal touch to their spaces.

“Hale Navy is a great colour — a really bold blue that’s also the Paint Shop’s colour of the year,” says McNeil. “My advice is to talk with a decorator over the phone or by video chat and explore colours you like. And don’t be afraid to let your personality shine through.”
