MARYSTOWN, N.L. — The Marystown YMCA recreation complex has achieved a status no other building in Newfoundland and Labrador has met.
The Town of Marystown announced June 12 the facility has attained gold accreditation in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), a green building certification designed by the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC).
Certification includes a set of rating systems for the design, construction, operation and maintenance of green buildings, homes and neighbourhoods to help with environmental responsibility and the efficient use of resources. The four levels of LEED are certified, silver, gold and platinum.
“The building received LEED gold certification because of the innovative approach to the overall construction phase, the building’s efficiency and the ability of the process to manage cost and identify opportunities for energy efficiency and long-term operational savings,” Mayor Sam Synard said in a release announcing the achievement.
The Town of Marystown owns the $16.5-million building, while the YMCA operates programming at the facility.
The complex contains an aquatic centre, gymnasium, walking/running track, fitness centre and child-minding room.
Environmental features include a state-of-the-art geo-thermal heating/cooling system, reduction in water usage, electric car-charging stations, treated water and wastewater, and large windows that reduce the need for artificial lighting.
An official announcement is planned at the facility for June 27.
