The RCMP has seized a large quantity of alcohol as a result of alleged smuggling activity between the French islands of Saint Pierre-Miquelon and the Burin Peninsula.

Burin Peninsula RCMP detachment commander Staff Sgt. Dale Foote said the seizure happened in the area between the communities of Point May and Fortune.

“As a result of two separate operations, this past week we seized 725 60-ounce bottles of contraband alcohol smuggled from Saint Pierre-Miquelon,” Foote said in a news release.

“The liquor is being smuggled by locals who are known to police. Although arrests have not yet been made, the RCMP are cognizant of the areas and groups who are actively involved in smuggling and we are continuing to investigate.

“Seizure of this liquor demonstrates the commitment of the RCMP to shut down this illegal activity. I thank all our police officers who were involved in these operations, as well as Fisheries and Land Resources, Fish and Wildlife Division who assisted.”
