A man accused of robbing a St. John’s bank and using a truck he was test-driving from a dealership as his getaway vehicle will spend some more time undergoing a medical evaluation before his court case proceeds.

Clarence Cantwell, 26, had allegedly taken a truck from a local dealership out for a test drive the morning of Dec. 15, and took it to the Scotiabank branch in Torbay Road Plaza just before lunchtime. Police say Cantwell was armed with a baseball bat and demanded cash before leaving the bank.

RNC officers arrested Cantwell without incident in the Military Road area about an hour later. The truck was found in a different location.

Cantwell is charged with robbery, having his face masked while committing an offence, and possessing a weapon dangerous to the public. He has made three short appearances in provincial court so far, each time ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation. On Friday, the court was told the assessing psychiatrist required more time with Cantwell before his case can proceed.
