The island portion of the province and the southern coast of Labrador are all under weather warnings from Environment Canada for New Year’s Day evening and continuing into Thursday morning.
For the Avalon Peninsula and the east and south coasts of the island, a blizzard warning is in effect.
Snow, at times heavy, will develop Tuesday night and will continue Wednesday and into Wednesday night, according to Environment Canada.
The snow, combined with strong winds, will produce blizzard conditions with near zero visibilities.
Snowfall amounts are expected to reach 10 to 20 centimetres by early Wednesday morning, and an additional 15 to 25 centimetres of snow is expected by Thursday morning.
Environment Canada says travel is expected to be “extremely hazardous.”
The south coast of Labrador, the Northern Peninsula and the west coast are under a blowing snow advisory, while central has a snowfall warning.
In St. John’s, the city is taking precautions with garbage collection due to the high wind warnings. Area 2A/B automated garbage collection and recycling collection is rescheduled to Thursday. People living in that area without a city-issued garbage cart will maintain their usual Wednesday garbage collection as scheduled.
